Government receives final renewal applications from DACA recipients

DACA Deadline Approaches

The Department of Homeland Security has not received the renewal paperwork of roughly 36,000 DACA recipients by its October 5 deadline, a government spokesperson told TPM Thursday, meaning thousands of undocumented young people could face deportation after handing over reams of information to government.

There have been issues in trying to reach all DACA recipients, Molinar said, as some who are eligible for renewal and live in low-income or rural areas may not be informed of their options until it's too late.

Last month, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the phase-out of DACA, which was created under the Obama Administration without legislative authorization from Congress. People holding the work permits can renew for another two years if their existing approval is set to run out before March 2018, by applying and paying a $495 fee. It protects from deportation for undocumented immigrants or "Dreamers", who were brought to the U.S.as children. With the get-up-and-go spirit of immigrants, and the audacity of youth, they are poised to make great contributions to our American future.

According to the U.S. Citizenship and immigration Services, 154,000 Dreamers had expiration dates between September 5 and March 5, 2018, which led to this many DACA beneficiaries having only a few weeks to submit renewal applications.

In a town hall Wednesday night on CNN, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi also told a recipient of the DACA program not to worry and that they would have a "Clean Dream Act" by December.

The City of Portland is spending $50,000 to help DACA recipients re-apply for protections and get legal advice.

According to data provided by US Citizenship and Immigration Services, as of Thursday, roughly 23 percent of those eligible to renew have yet to file applications. In Texas, 2,682 people in Hurricane Harvey-affected areas, or 28 percent of DACA recipients in the area, did not submit their applications in time.

The Department of Homeland Security has not sent notifications to DACA recipients about their renewal eligibility or the upcoming deadline.

"We're not asking for anything free", Ana said, "I'm not here to be bad, I'm here to help, to cooperate".

"Many of them came out of the shadows under the DACA program, enrolled in school or getting a college education, or serving in the military, many of them have opened up their own businesses and over 90 percent of them are working", said Jose Rodriguez, executive director, El Conocilio.

She says her dream was cut short."It breaks my heart because I want to fight for people's rights and I feel I deserve the right to be a lawyer no matter if I'm an immigrant or not". "I got my letter from USCIS, saying they have received my application.so that's good".

President Trump has challenged Congress to act. Of course that motivates you more to do well in school.

The president has said Congress should vote on the status of Dreamers and the people here want Congress to act soon and let them remain in the US. "And all of them will lose their position unless there's a Congressional solution within the next few months", Kerosky said.
