American CoCo Vandeweghe celebrates beating top seed Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic in their US Open quarter-final

It's also the first quarterfinal appearance in NY for Keys.

Vandeweghe's emotion contributed to her sloppy game and allowed Pliskova to save several break points and bring the first set to a tie-breaker. The confidence and rhythm continued to push Keys forward, consolidating the break to 15 for a 2-0 lead.

The 15th-seeded Keys finished the set with a 19-4 edge in winners.

Vandeweghe, 26, was eliminated in the first round at Flushing Meadows past year and has never before gotten this far here. "I know that's what my main focus was - just to get it back, not have her have a free point too easily".

Nine months after an intruder attacked her with a knife, Kvitova is three victories away from what would be her first US Open title.

"I won the juniors here when I was 16 and dreamed of playing on the real stage", said 25-year-old Vandeweghe. Stephens, Keys and Vandeweghe will be trying to reach their first career Grand Slam final. Serena has knocked Venus out of majors ten times, and seven times at the last hurdle in the final.

The U.S. Open will pay out a record total of over $50 million this year.

In the men's bracket, no American men remain as Sam Querrey lost his quarterfinal match.

It's taking longer than most expected; that's equally true of the two other younger semifinalists who will take the court Thursday night. But he took that set in a tiebreaker. "The Australian crowd was one of the first crowds that really kind of enjoyed my tennis and my personality", she said.

Future funds will be used to help storm-affected tennis facilities.

"There's always going to be somebody who says something".

The 22-year-old American can expect great support from the NY crowd as she takes on Kanepi, who is into her second U.S. Open quarter-final having reached the last eight in 2010. And her father, John, was the No. 1 pick in the 1988 National Football League draft, and the rookie of the year for the New England Patriots. Capriati and Seles fell in the quarterfinals, while Davenport made it into the semifinals.

Kanepi was able to get into the qualifying event by virtue of a protected ranking.

A semi-finalist at the Australian Open in January, she also reached the last eight at Wimbledon this year and has now equalled her best performance at a slam.

Pliskova was beaten 7-6 (4) 6-3 by American CoCo Vandeweghe to end her hopes of clinching a maiden grand slam title. Though of course in Pliskova's case, it would be rather a matter of keeping the No1 ranking that she acquired at Wimbledon, despite falling in the second round. From 2005 through 2016, women from 23 different lands reached U.S. Open quarterfinals, including such relatively new countries as Latvia, Estonia, Slovakia and Belarus.

Though Dolgopolov is unseeded, he had won two of the last three meetings with Nadal.

Yet she still recalls her family emphasizing John Wooden's pyramid of success, still remembers her grandfather telling her to take care of the details like smoothing out her socks before playing. "We have so many Americans to talk about in the last days of the U.S. Open", Keys told The Associated Press. Pliskova threw her racket in frustration after losing the first set tiebreak.

CoCo Vandeweghe became the third American player into the women's semi-finals at the US Open with an impressive victory over world No 1 Karolina Pliskova. "Maybe it's like some Jedi mind trick", said Vandeweghe, who still did not hide her emotions on court, such as when she cracked a racket against the ground after a second consecutive double-fault in the opening set.

And 15th seed Keys rounded out a flawless day for the United States with a dominant 6-3 6-3 victory in NY. I don't think anyone is totally surprised about that. The top-seeded Nadal faces Alexandr Dolgopolov on Monday afternoon. 1-6, 6-4, in the late night match at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Similar to Pliskova today and Lucie the other day.

Even when it comes to music, Madison Keys is competitive.

Vandeweghe joins fellow American women Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens in the semifinals.
