Around 400 Manx students await A level results

Schools and colleges across the city opened their doors today as more than 2,900 students took a deep breath to find out how they fared in their exams.

Seventy nine per cent of grades achieved at A-level (A2) were B or above, which the school said was its highest ever.

The overall pass rate was 99 per cent, while 78 per cent gained A* to C grades.

Monika added an impressive A* and A to her string of A level successes after scooping two A* grades previous year, bringing her grand total to 3 A*s and 1 A. Medieval and modern history, further maths, computing, politics, PE, film studies, drama, music and geography also all achieved the 100 per cent pass rate.

100 per cent of students also achieved Distinction* or Distinction in science single and triple awards.

Baxter College headteacher, Tim Waites, said: "Several subjects had new syllabuses and the students coped really well with the changing A-level landscape".

The results were the first involving reformed A-levels that have been decoupled from AS-levels in England taken midway through the two-year course, and examining new content.

Top performers at the school, who scored three or more A* to B grades, included Ben Howard, James Cadwallader, Josh Freemantle, Beth Pickford and Sam Williams.

95 per cent of students are now on their way to their first choice at university, with almost half of those being top universities with nearly a quarter of students receiving un-conditional offers.

The runs flowed and on 28, Rahul enjoyed a reprieve as he lofted Dimuth Karunaratne and the catch eluded Kumara. So even if they achieve it against an "in transition" Sri Lankan side, it would be a creditable feat still.
