Brides panic as Alfred Angelo stores close across the country

Bridal gown retailer Alfred Angelo planned to close all its stores across the country Thursday and file for bankruptcy, according to multiple media reports.

A man could be heard inside, saying, "no comment" and "Go to Alfred Angelo". They also ordered and paid for bridesmaid dresses, but they have no information on whether they'll get those.

Social media posts claiming the South Florida-based company was going out of business started spreading like wildfire Thursday.

Toscano of Rochester left Alfred Angelo Bridal with a dress for her sister's wedding - but she wasn't happy.

McIntyre is surprised that earlier this week her contacts with the company revealed nothing of the potential trouble, telling her only that any buzz about the stores closing was related to a shift in the sales model as opposed to the company going bankrupt.

"She was like no, you have to get it today, or that's that", said Cassidy, who received a call from the store around 4 p.m.

"They said, 'We can't do any redfunds, we can't do anything to help you, '" said Kathy Hunt, who said she was out $1,100 for her daughter's dress.

Making a scene wasn't an option, said Koons, because the employees at the store were there at "out of the goodness of their hearts". Employees did not answer the phone at the chain's store in Broward County.

The second friend had put 60 percent down and the Alfred Angelo shop will be giving it to her for that price, Fudge said. In Sunrise, the store was closed and a sign told customers to e-mail a law firm.

At the store Friday afternoon, most of the lights were off and the doors were locked.

The abrupt closure of dozens of Alfred Angelo stores across the country threw brides-to-be into limbo, leaving thousands of customers distraught over the prospect of finding another dress on short notice.

WOWT 6 News spoke with a bride who said police officers told her and other customers to leave the Lincoln store.

"We're two weeks away from our wedding and freaking out", said Keith Ross. Alfred Angelo operates more than 60 stores in the USA including at retailers in Nebraska.

With her wedding in 100 days, Busboom said this unforeseen snag won't get her down.

"I'm not anxious about it", he said.
