"It's so cool, we really believe it is going to take your home music experience to the next level", Apple chief executive Tim Cook said of the new device.

In addition, Cook said Apple, headquartered in Cupertino, Northern California, now has 16 million registered software developers worldwide for its consumer electronics, including smartphone known as iPhone, and 3 million of them were added a year ago.

It wouldn't be the first time that Apple hopped on the bandwagon of a technology product popularized by a competitor.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Apple is hoping a new smart home speaker will strike a chord with music lovers — the latest test of the iPhone maker's ability to redefine markets originally staked out by its rivals.

Yet Monday's announcement, rather than being routine, was the result of a negotiation stretching back at least to 2015 when Amazon stopped selling Apple TVs on its retail site.

Apple will let people play audio in multiple rooms while Google works on introducing that feature to all speakers that have Chromecast built in.

Like the Amazon Echo and Google Home, the HomePod will play music and also help people to manage their lives and homes. It shan't be wrong to say, Apple HomePod is the new iPod but for homes. Over the course of a few songs, Apple explained the the HomePod isn't trying to do anything cheap like create artificial stereo by bouncing the left and right channels in different directions. In-fact, according to the company, users can even ask Siri who is the drummer of a particular song, and it would be able to pull up answers for you.

Apple HomePod comes at $349 (Rs 22,440 approx.) and will start shipping in the US, UK and Australia starting December this year.

While we're still waiting to test the performance of the HomePod's voice recognition and interaction, the sonic performance showed Apple has made something that's easily a match for Sonos' famed speakers.

This year's developers conference will be the first since 2013 to introduce new hardware.

Amazon Echo, powered by Alexa voice assistant, has been around for over a couple of years now.

The biggest news however is the introduction of the Virtual Reality (VR) developer kit for High Sierra. The new variant has a new Files app, new productivity features and searchable handwritten notes using Apple Pencil. It will not block the ads themselves, though.

There's also new iMac Pro as well, which features a 5K display; an 8-core Xeon processor (upgradable up to 18-cores); up to a whopping 4TB of solid-state disk storage; built-in 10GB Ethernet; up to 128GB memory; and four Thunderbolt 3 ports. It's part of Apple's effort to entice professionals with tablets that can handle many tasks previously reserved for laptops. Apple is optimistic that the iPhone 7 Plus will continue to spur growth, though interest in the iconic device has been on the wane after recent smartphone launches from a slew of Android phone manufacturers led by the likes of Samsung, Google and Huawei.

Apple offered some hints about new capabilities in the next iPhone, including about so-called augmented reality, in which digital information is overlaid on real-world images.
